Its time to stop dreaming and make your dreams a reality at the School for Musical Performance. We have making been making dreams come true for many aspiring young musicians. Our past students have gone on to have successful musical careers performing with Alicia Keys, Yolanda Adams, The Chicago Symphony and Broadway shows. Our school is dedicated to helping students achieve their artistic goals. We prepare students for high school and college auditions. Our staff of teachers are full time professional musicians with music degrees and certified by the Board of Education. We offer private lessons especially geared towards each students specific needs. Our vocal teacher comes from all styles of music as do all the rest of the teachers from Rock to Bach. We also teach music theory and ear training. We accommodate some special needs for students and pre-schoolers. Were open seven days a week all year long. Our school is run by musical director, David Kovins. The school is conveniently located on Kings Highway between Coney Island Ave and Ocean Parkway accessible to all public transportation.
David Kovins earned his BA and MA degrees in performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He served on the staff of the Lighthouse School of the Blind music department as percussion teacher for seven years, and also taught at various schools in the New York City area. In 1980, he founded the School for Musical Performance in Brooklyn, where he currently teaches. Kovins has performed throughout the U.S. as a percussionist with jazz, rock, cabaret and theatre ensembles, as well as with the Jerome Robbins Dance Company, the American Theatre Lab, the Manhattan Percussion Ensemble, cabaret performers Anita Morris and Wayland Flowers, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. He has also performed in theatre productions under the direction of Bob Waldman, David Spangler, and Grover Dale. Kovins leads his own vibraphone-based group that records and performs in the NYC area, and has released a CD entitled "Vibe from New York." Some of his earlier music for solo vibraphone has been published by Hal Leonard and Warner Bros. Music.
